There are two reason I write this post. One is because it is a question I get asked regularly and I want to answer and clear it up. The second is a little traffic secret I want to share with you.

The Traffic Secret

As with any site I have, and with all business with which i consult, I insist on installing traffic analysis software to obtain statistics as to how many people are visiting my sites, how long they stay on them and perhaps most importantly, how they found their way to my sites.

This last element, the way people find their way to my sites is very interesting to anyone who hopes to increase traffic to their site. If you know how people are finding your site then you can manipulate certain elements of your sites to help even more people to find your site.

An example. Yesterday somebody found my site using the search term:

‘Is 400 visitors a day good?’

I know this because of the stats plugin I have installed on this blog. Naturally I checked out the search term for myself and found that I am the number three ranked page on Google for this term. I would never have known that I ranked for this term, or that somebody actually searched for it, if it was not for the analytics software.

Now, this search term itself is unlikely to be very popular but it opened my eyes to the fact that people do ask the question:

How many Visits a day is good?

So, by writing another article on a similar theme but broader I can potentially increase the search engine visitors to my site. All because of the feedback from my site tracking.

The answer to your question

There is actually a very simple answer which I would give to this question. It 99% of cases it does not matter how many visitors you have to your site, what matters more is how responsive these visitors are, or how well they convert. Let me give you an example. I worked recently with a client who sells a high end product. High end implies a premium product with a high price tag (and thus high profit also). Well this client was getting over 500 visitors a day to his site through his various advertising methods but only one had brought his product within the last 45 days. A 0.2% conversion rate is pretty poor, however my client was content as the money he made from just one sales was enough to justify his figures.

I tried to explain how his thinking was all wrong, and it was not about throwing hundreds of people at your site hoping some will stick but more about targeting the right type of customer so that more of them convert. Naturally his answer wa WHY?

This is why. Your spending time and money on attracting these visitors. But ultimately what is important is the ones that convert or buy from you. So if I could find a way to convert every person who visits my site, and in the same 45 days i only managed to send one person to my site then I would be better off. Why? Because I would know the method of finding actually quality viewers and in the process saved on my server load and other costs. I could then simply try to repeat whatever I did to obtain that visitor.

I know this example is a little extreme but the point is this. It does not really matter how many visitors you have per day, what matters more is how many conversions or sales you have per day. The aim of the game is not to simply increase the number of visitors you have per day but to increase the amount of conversions you have. 500 visitors a day with 1 conversion is obviously worse then 100 visitors a day with 2 conversions.

Try to focus on the end result, whether that be sales, adding people to your email list, singing up people to your site or whatever. That is the number that is really important. Counting visitors alone is meaningless unless you compare it to the end result.
